The flow of hot ionised gas in our Sun generates a powerful magnetic field. About every 11 years, the Sun’s north and south poles flip. This solar cycle is associated with the appearance of sunspots and huge eruptions such as solar flares, which can affect us here on Earth. Predicting them is an important area of research related to both our well-being and our understanding of the evolution and activity of other stars. The EU-funded SOLARNET project is bringing together world-class European infrastructures for high-resolution solar physics research to enhance instrumentation, data access, imaging tools and algorithm development, experimentation, collaboration and trainings that will support full exploitation of future research facilities.
