EXCITE2 Enhanced X(cross)-disciplinary Community-driven Imaging Technologies for Earth and Environmental material research

Tackling climate change and human-induced hazards requires a deep understanding of the fundamental properties of Earth materials; how they form, transform and interact with their environment. The EU-funded EXCITE2 project brings together more than a dozen European research facilities into a single accessible infrastructure, offering advanced imaging techniques, from X-ray tomography to electron microscopy, for studying Earth materials at all scales. By revealing the processes that govern material behaviour from the atomic to the rock scale, the project aims to improve knowledge of environmental toxicity, support sustainable extraction of critical metals for renewable energy and explore safe, long-term storage of climate-altering gases, delivering practical solutions for a healthier planet and a more sustainable future.

A sixth call will be open in Autumn 2026.
