Best practices booklet: synergies between RIs, S3 goals and regional research priorities
Research Infrastructures (RIs) have significant potential to drive regional and local socio-economic development by aligning with Smart Specialization Strategies (S3, EU regional innovation policies that focus on identifying and investing in areas where regions have unique strengths to maximize R&D investments), as highlighted in the ESFRI White Paper (2020).
Under the RICH Europe project, a 2024 survey across EU Member States examined practices and policies fostering synergies between RIs, S3 goals and regional research priorities. The findings underscore the critical role of partnerships between industry, RIs and scientific research in achieving regional development objectives. The results of the survey were used to create the booklet "Best practices booklet: synergies between RIs, S3 goals and regional research priorities".
This booklet presents case studies and strategies showcasing the alignment of RIs with S3 frameworks across various countries. It highlights the capacity of RIs to contribute to regional innovation ecosystems and national development agendas.
